There are many benefits to using herbs in the nesting boxes of your chicken coop. A single herb can help many different areas and provide a happy environment for your hens. Happy hens equals more eggs!
Most of the herbs I recommend grow easily in a backyard garden. There is something special about growing herbs and then using them to improve the wellness of your livestock. It’s a great way to use up an abundant harvest.
Do chickens prefer to lay in the nesting boxes with herbs?
From what I’ve witness so far, yes! We actually started using herbs in the coop when our girls significantly dropped in production. Hens are mothers so it’s in their nature to prepare a sweet spot for their future chicks (even if you plan to collect the eggs).
How often do I need to refresh the herbs in the chicken coop?
Every time you clean the coop and refresh the shavings sprinkle some in the nesting boxes. This also give the chickens enrichment as they will scratch through the bedding and forage for the herbs.

What are the best herbs to use around chickens and in the coop?
Here is a list of all the ones we use and like to incorporate into the nesting boxes. Each one will greatly benefit your flock!
Peppermint (or spearmint) – a natural insect repellent for things like lice, flies, and rodents. Keeps the coop smelling fresh and cool.
Rosemary – has antimicrobial properties, which helps to reduce harmful bacteria in the coop. Also improves air quality and deters pest.
Bee Balm (or oregano for similar properties) – helps prevent fungal growth in the coop. It’s strong aroma deters pest like mites and lice but is enjoyable for chickens. If the chickens ingest it can contribute to their overall health since it is high in antioxidants and vitamins.
Holy Basil (also known as Tulsi) – the calming aroma helps to reduce stress in chickens and to control odor. Has strong antimicrobial properties that help prevent harmful bacteria and fungi growth. It is also known to support respiratory health.
Lippia Alba (or lemon balm) – Another good one for reducing stress and promoting better respiratory health. Chickens may benefit from its immune boosting properties if they peck at it. Also has antimicrobial properties and repels insects.
Calendula – known to enhance the color of egg yolks if the hens snack on it. Repels pest and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Chamomile & Lavender – calming floral additions that helps to reduce stress. The less stress the hens have the better their egg productions will be!
Use what you have!
Just incorporating one of these herbs into the nesting boxes will be beneficial. Make a big batch of whatever you have and store it for coop cleaning days.
Use caution with herbs. While all of these are generally safe its best to introduce them in moderation. Watch how the chickens respond and avoid overuse.
